Maroela, is the Afrikaans spelling of Marula, and is the common name of the Scierocarya Birrea Tree. This tree is a much-favoured indigenous tree, for both medicinal and ritual purposes. Its fruits are widely eaten, by people and animals alike, and is said to have strong aphrodisiac properties. This lodging in Kruger National Park has several caravan camping sites each of which offers a different variety of attractions and activities. The facilities while excellent, are generally of a similar type.
Maroela Camp has 24 campsites which are subject to the certain restraints. A single campsite can only accommodate a maximum 6 persons per caravan plus a side-tent and vehicle, one tent and vehicle, or one motorized caravan with a side tent. In the case of camping with a small tent, more than one tent will be permitted on a site, provided that the maximum number of 6 persons is not exceeded for accommodation in Kruger National Park. Vacation visitors may use generators only one hour after sunrise and run them until one hour before sunset.
Communal kitchen and ablution facilities are available at all the camps, but cooking utensils, crockery and cutlery are not provided at the accommodation in Kruger National Park. Although ground sheets are permitted, specific arrangements must be made at the reception office with camps which have lawns. There are no restaurant / shop facilities in Maroela Camp.
Maroela Camp is situated about 4km (2.4 miles) from Orpen and Eastgate airport is situated a further 68km (42 miles) from Orpen gate. It is served by SA express with daily flights from Johannesburg to Cape Town.
