Tucked into the Knob horn trees beyond the banks of Sabi Sand’s largest lake is an old hunting lodge. It has thick walls and a dense conical grass roof. It was built in the style of an African rondavel to beat the South African heat. A covered porch extends towards the lake. Chitwa Chitwa built five more rondavels to house the Safari Lodge’s ten guests. Traditionally, the rondavels would form a circle. These however, are placed on either side of the main lodge so each has a lake–view patio. Another welcome break with tradition is the swimming pool – divinely cool after a hot game drive. Each guest rondavel is one large round room. They are surprisingly light and airy because of another break from tradition – French patio doors and ample windows. An eight foot wall cuts three–quarters of the way across the room, leaving lots of space between it and the roofs peak to move the breeze. The African theme is reflected in the warmly decorated rooms where the earthy colours and natural materials are woven carefully and subtly together. Safari Lodge is enjoyed for its rich diversity of animals and bird life which can be easily observed from each cottage.
